Golf On Amelia Island
Golf- as Mark Twain said is a good walk spoiled. I am not one to agree with that statement, you see I am a serious Golf Nut. Amelia Island is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and the best place to live especially if you are a Golf Nut.
Amelia Island has some great golf courses and I have played them all over the years. We are lucky enough to have 2 Tom Fazio courses, a Bobby Weed course, an Arnold Palmer course, and a Pete Dye course. This has to be paradise for great golf and it is. We are also lucky enough to be close to Jacksonville and its great courses including the TPC Stadium Course at Sawgrass.
I currently live at Amelia National a new Tom Fazio Country Club Community. This is one of the best new golf courses in North Florida if not the whole state. It has all of the things that make a modern course fun. It has many different tee areas for all levels of skill, big greens, lots of water and sand bunkers. It is private but if you can find a way to play it you should.
Amelia Island Plantation has 4 wonderful courses to choose from, my favorite is Long Point another great Tom Fazio course. If you are staying or planning on staying at this great resort or if you are lucky enough to live here this is definitely a place to play. If you are looking for great views the ocean links has some of the best you will ever see.
We are also lucky to have a great 27 holes public course on the island; you can always find a game with a local.
With all that being said I think the most fun I have had in a long time is playing a 9 hole course at White Oak Plantation. White Oak is a private game preserve. The founder built a 9 hole golf course for his friends to play when they came to visit him. Very few people play White Oak but if you can you will be treated to one of the funniest courses you will ever play. The hole that stands out the most is a short par 4 that you hit over a pond to an elevated green. The pond has a water fall in the middle that makes you think the green is closer than it is. When you arrive to the green you see that above the fall is another large pond between you and the green. It is just spectacular, very hard to describe but you will know what I mean when you play.
When you come to Amelia for a visit bring your clubs and enjoy a good walk or in most cases a fun ride in a golf cart around our great courses.
